From mix and match bikinis to trusty one-pieces, Rebecca Tay dives into five of the season's best swimwear style.

In most ways, this time of year is an optimistic one: longer days, warmer temps, and hopefully a summer holiday or two to look forward to.

In other ways, however, it can be stressful and anxiety-inducing for some: event season usually means a lot more primping and preening than we’ve done in a while, and while the promise of long days by a pool or at the beach sound blissful, they also inevitably require you to slip — or squeeze — into a swimsuit.

A swimsuit roundup wouldn’t be complete without Vancouver’s Beth Richards. Known for her well-made, fashion-forward styles, she’s long been our first port of call when we need a new suit that fits well and makes us feel great. This season, we’re loving the new BR x Bohème collaboration, a partnership with fellow Canadian slow fashion label known for its easy silhouettes: this one-piece in particular is made from recycled nylon, and comes with a detachable halter strap and ruched belt.

If you’ve often felt as though you were a Kardashian in a previous life, then you’ll know that Skims, Kim Kardashian’s line of wildly successful shapewear, recently launched swimwear. As you’d expect, the collection is full of pieces that Kim would wear, but none more so, we think, than this ‘swim tank monokini’. Available in seven colours, it’s ideal for going from pool to aperitifs and looks good under skirts or trousers for a cool evening look, too. It’s currently on waitlist status, but we’re sure a restock is on the way.

A mix and match mentality is a great one when it comes to swimwear, especially with brands like Vancouver’s Ocin — pronounced ‘ocean’ — offering cute styles in solid colours that truly do complement each other. Case in point: this high-neck halter top in a rich shade of green called olivine. Made from recycled and regenerated nylons, it surprisingly goes well with these classic bottoms in the terracotta-meets-orangey sunset hue. P.S. the brand donates one per cent of all swim sales to support Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, a not-for-profit that runs beach cleanups to inspire better consumer behaviour

Designed in Vancouver and made in California and Taiwan from Italian fabrics, Left On Friday was founded in 2018 by former Lululemon-ites Shannon Savage and Laura Low Ah Kee. Specializing in buttery soft fabrics that are durable, machine washable, and offer support and have a compressive feel when wet and dry, our favourite set from the brand is this Pool Days top and Hi Tide bottom in the cute tricolour ‘party waves’ print.

We stand firmly in the camp that everyone needs a yellow swimsuit — or at least some kind of bright, look-at-me one. Enter this classic, square-neck one-piece, which has an open back, shelf bra with removable pads, and looks great as a bathing suit at the beach or as a bodysuit at dinner.
