The internet has backed a woman for leaving her fiancé's family trip when he decided to pull a prank on her.

In a viral post submitted to Reddit's popular r/AmITheA**hole forum, a woman under the username u/Odd-Question8277 asked the "AITA" community if she was in the wrong for what she did. Her story has gained over 5,000 upvotes and 1,000 comments.

"My fiance's mother 'Lia' hates me," the Redditor began, "I honestly hate her too. I've never felt this way about another human being before, but she has been nothing but awful since day one. It got to the point she was telling people she didn't even have a son and wouldn't speak to him, because she hates me so much. I could see how depressed he was over losing her and agreed to do family therapy."

During the family therapy sessions, Lia agreed to stop being so mean to the original poster (OP). She does, however, pretend that the user doesn't exist. With this new rule, Lia rarely sees her son and will not have a relationship with possible grandchildren. If the rudeness picks back up, the OP's fiancé is "done with her."

Since the agreement, things have been awkward between her fiancé and Lia, but he doesn't want to lose connection with his mother. The Reddit user said that things have gotten better when they do see her.

The OP said yes to a family vacation with her fiancé's family. They attended a wedding in a different state and spent some time there. Lia was also a guest at the wedding and was "very happy" that she didn't have to speak to the Redditor. One day during the trip, the OP, her fiancé, Lia and other members of the family decided to go to a water park.

The OP's fiancé told her that he was nervous about the bikini she was wearing as it was tied in the back. He felt it was a safety hazard as some rides were intense. Instead, he found one that he thought she would love. Since she enjoys wearing things that he buys for her so she put the bathing suit on.

"Imagine my surprise when we got there and Lia had the same bikini," she revealed, "It was like something out of a movie. She stopped mid walk and just glared at me. Everyone was laughing, because they were all in on it. They saw something similar in TikTok and thought it would be funny due to how much we hate each other. They had been trying to pull it off for a while, but Lia bought a bathing suit while on the trip, so they saw the opportunity. Her husband and my fiance were taking pictures of us. Lia was pissed. I was about to cry."

Lia was also upset about the prank but eventually found it funny as she enjoys pranks like the rest of her family does. Lia and her husband have a playful relationship, so she didn't feel as "betrayed" as the Reddit user did. The OP felt embarrassed and insecure while with the group as she thought that Lia has a better body than she did. She even overheard Lia's husband saying "at least I get to be married to the hot one."

"I decided to leave because I wasn't having fun," she said, "My fiance was upset and felt I ruined the day, but did offer to leave with me. I said it was ok, but when I got back to the hotel I decided to change my flight and go home. just don't like being the butt of the joke and didn't want to be there."

Her fiancé believes that she was overreacting to the whole situation and feels embarrassed in front of his family.

"We are not calling off the engagement though that was never really an option for me," u/Odd-Question8277 said in a comment made to Newsweek, "He made a mistake and yes I am upset, but I believe mistakes should be learning opportunities, and he has proven he is willing to communicate and grow from this.

"It was one mistake in five years, and I am floored at some of the comments acting like there is no response except breaking up. He has proven he is willing to go no contact for me, and one mistake doesn't just erase five years of him being loyal and respectful," she concluded.

Many trends are created on TikTok. The trend referred to in the Reddit post comes from videos where many people show up at a family or friend get-together wearing the same article of clothing. Some videos have gained millions of views and likes.

Many Reddit users were quick to comment in defense of the OP's actions.

"[Not the a**hole]. At this point, I would be rethinking the entire wedding. What kind of [a**hole] plays a prank like this on the woman he professes to love? A successful prank is one where when all is said and done, everyone is laughing. This one humiliated you. That's not a prank. That is straight up emotional abuse. And Lia got over it, because she enjoyed your humiliation and that her son is coming closer the her family with an act like this," u/GreekAmericanDom wrote, receiving the top comment of over 10,000 upvotes.

U/awyllt questioned, "[Not the a**hole] Is your fiancé insane? He knows that you and his mother have a horrible relationship and instead of being happy that you managed to be civil with each other he decided that it would be sooo funny to provoke you both? Really?"

"[Not the a**hole] - Your husband feels embarrassed.. well what about you the person who he embarrassed. This family sounds toxic and you do not have to be apart of it. You didn't make him leave with you so he needs to get over it," u/sgray1919 said.

"[Not the a**hole]. Your partner and his family see no issue with Lia treating you poorly. Then to plan a prank that would essentially pit you against her is disgusting," u/Voidg stated.
