Follow this dry cleaner’s guide to keep your swim trunks fresh and clean.

“People don’t take care of their swimwear. They think it’s fine to hang it up and be done. It’s not,” says Jerry Pozniak, owner of dry cleaner Jeeves New York.

You must wash out the sunscreen, chlorine and salt, which stain and damage swimwear.

1. Let the bathing suit dry fully before you wash it. You can towel-dry it, sit in the sun or hang it up.

2. Wash in cold water. Warm or hot water can cause shrinkage and fade or discolor patterns.

3. Once the suit is washed, give it a good snap from the waistband to help get the wrinkles out.

4. Hang it up to dry or, if you must, pop it in the dryer on the lowest possible temperature.

5. Ideally, trunks should be stored on a clip hanger, but who has the closet space? A neat, single fold will do.
