Mother-In-Law Dragged for 'Hating' Parent Taking Grandchild to a Swim Class

The internet has slammed a mother-in-law for "hating" a parent for taking their grandchild to a swim class.

In a viral post submitted to Reddit's popular r/AmITheA**hole forum, a parent under the username u/Swimtimefun asked the "AITA" community if they were in the wrong for what they did. Their story has gained over 6,000 upvotes and 900 comments.

The original poster (OP) began their story by explaining that they recently started taking their 6-month-old child to a swim class. The class takes safety very seriously with parents required to be "in physical contact" with their child at all times during the class. There is also a swim teacher for every four guests while in the pool with the babies and they are being watched by lifeguards.

"My MiL [mother-in-law] hates, HATES, HATES this and has repeatedly told my wife she needs to stop me before I 'get our baby killed.' Wife had no problem with the class initially but after her mom started her campaign asked if I could wait until the baby is older. I don't want to because the class already started and is good for our son. I told wife if she had an actual objection we could address it, but I'm not okay with her mom interfering in our parenting choices. Wife said fine, but I can tell she's annoyed at me." they wrote.

The Redditor believes that their mother-in-law shouldn't have a say in the matter while their wife needs to not tolerate her mother's "nagging."

Newsweek reached out to u/Swimtimefun for comment.

What are some benefits of taking your child to an instructional swim class? According to goldfishswimschool.com, it can teach children about water safety. Swimming can also decrease stress and anxiety as well as build muscle and strengthen lung capacity.

Learning how to swim can also save lives. According to the CDC, for children ages 1 to 14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death. Children between the age of 1 and 4 have the highest drowning rates, and most of these deaths happen in a swimming pool.

The Reddit community was quick to comment in defense of the OP.

"[Not the a**hole] 1. Your MIL can't make parenting choices 2. Your wife needs to deal with the nagging without giving in 3. Your wife needs to deal with the nagging without taking it out on you," u/lellyla received the top comment with over 9,000 upvotes.

"Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death worldwide. The vast majority of those deaths are children under the age of four. There is literally no downside to teaching your baby to swim. Only upsides. [Not the a**hole]," u/diagnosedwolf stated.

U/CommunicationOdd9406 exclaimed, "[Not the a**hole] the entire point is not to get the baby killed. Good luck with your MIL interfering in all you and your wife decisions. Better get that taken care of now."

"[Not the a**hole] - learning how to swim young is great for babies/children. MIL definitely does not get a say. Perhaps bring your wife along to some of the classes so she can see first hand the safety precautions," u/Potential-Use-4971 explained.
