Sandy Bluff Road is the new location for a proposed solar farm by Turning Point Energy, a development, advisory, and investment company from New York.

Last July, the firm was planning a site at Pratt and Somonauk roads. Senior Development Manager for Turning Point Energy Alexander Mendelson explained the land lease switch.

Mendelson claims the project would drop nearly $25,000 annually into the city of Sandwich coffers. He added there would be no impact on adjacent property values with limited site lighting, low vehicle traffic, and no flammable equipment or panels once completed. There was the promise of 50-75 local jobs over a 12-18 month period.

The agriculture site is south of Frazier Road and west of Sandy Bluff Road, north of Route 34.

Two other benefits could be derived from the project: encouraging new light industry facilities and supplying 900 households with electricity.

Three-season blooming native pollinator plantings as a weed deterrent with sheep being deployed for plant and weed control. Sandwich Mayor Todd Latham pushed for 4-H and FFA partnerships.

Two city council inquiries for locating solar panels on the rooftop of Plano Molding or in the Center Street detention pond were not feasible, the company said.

After a 50-year life span, the solar panels would be recycled, Mendelson said.
